I will show you how to get started with the basics of this ever-growing field. From there, you can continue learning and develop your skills in whatever way works best for you.
So what are you waiting for? Let’s get started!
1. Learn the basics of digital marketing
There is no way to get around this one – you need to learn the basics of digital marketing before starting anything else. This includes learning about concepts such as Search Engine Optimization (SEO), social media marketing, Display Ads, Email marketing, and more.
You don’t need to learn them in-depth, initially just the basics on how to do it and it would help in a good start. We can learn all the things slowly and gradually.
Luckily, there are plenty of free online courses and tutorials available to help you get started. You can also find plenty of articles and blog posts that will teach you the basics. Once you have a good foundation, you can start applying what you learned to your own marketing efforts.
There is also a basic digital marketing course from Google which I highly recommend. You can check it out too.
2. Choose a niche
One of the most important things you need to do when starting digital marketing is to choose a niche. This is simply a specific topic or industry that you want to focus your marketing efforts on.
One of the advantages of digital marketing is that you can target a niche audience very effectively. You can create specialized content, and use specific channels and tactics to reach this audience.
So how do you choose a good niche?
It can be a bit tricky, but there are a few things you can do to make it easier. First, think about what you’re interested in or passionate about. This will help you create content and marketing campaigns that are more interesting to you and your audience.
You can also use online tools like Google Trends or BuzzSumo to see which niches are popular right now and where potential customers are interested. This can give you some ideas about what to focus on.
If you are doing affiliate marketing, don’t miss to research about the availability of products online to promote.
Always choose a niche where you are somewhat familiar with or learning about. Never pick a niche in which you are inexperienced. You could wind up empty-handed if you do so.
Here are some of the highly profitable niches to explore:
- Make Money Online
- Fitness and Weight Loss
- Beauty Treatments
- Dating & Relationships
- Pet Training
- Gadgets And Technology
You can download our complete list of the most profitable niches of 2022 from here.
Whatever niche you choose, make sure it is one that has a lot of potential for growth. I recommend starting with a micro-niche like Dating Advice for Women in 30s. But don’t choose a niche that is too small or saturated.
3. Decide which channel you want to start digital marketing with
Once you have chosen a niche, you need to decide on the specific marketing channels you want to focus on. There are a lot of digital marketing channels including Search Engine Optimization(SEO). Social Media Marketing, Email Marketing, and more.
The most preferred channels people start with are search engine optimization (SEO), social media marketing, affiliate marketing, and content marketing.
Let’s see what are the advantages and disadvantages of these preferred channels so you can decide better:
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
The advantage of SEO is that it can be a very effective way to reach potential customers who are looking for your product or service. In fact, studies have shown that organic search traffic is the number one source of website traffic for most businesses and accounts for around 70% of all website traffic.
The disadvantage of SEO is that it can take time to rank your website in the search engines and it is very complex. You need to create high-quality content and optimize your website for the search engines. It can also be expensive to hire an SEO consultant.
Social Media Marketing
The advantage of social media marketing is that it is a very effective way to reach a large number of people. In fact, social media platforms have billions of users worldwide. This makes it a great way to build brand awareness and reach new customers.
The disadvantage of social media marketing is that it can be time-consuming. You need to create engaging content and build relationships with followers. It can also be expensive to run social media ads.
The advantage of affiliate marketing is that it is a very effective way to make money. In fact, studies have shown that affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to make money online.
The disadvantage of affiliate marketing is that it can be difficult to find good affiliate programs. You need to find a program that offers high commissions and has a good reputation. It can also be expensive to run paid ads.
The advantage of content marketing is that it is a powerful method to build brand awareness and reach new customers. Some studies have shown that content marketing produces more leads than any other form of marketing.
The disadvantage of content marketing is that it can be a very time-consuming process. You need to create high-quality content and distribute it across different various platforms. It can also be expensive to hire a content marketer.
In my journey, I started with SEO and Social Media Marketing with Facebook only. You can pick any of the top digital marketing channels.
It’s important to choose a few channels that you are comfortable with and that you will be able to maintain regularly. Don’t try to do too much at once – you will only end up overwhelmed and frustrated.
Start with one or two channels that you are confident with, and then expand from there as you learn more about digital marketing.
4. Create a website
Once you have decided on the marketing channels you want to focus on, it is time to create a website. A website is a must-have when you start with digital marketing. This is your online home base; it is where you will house all of your marketing content and campaigns.
There are a few things you need to consider when creating a website:
The domain name is the address of your website (e.g. www.mywebsite.com). It is important to choose a domain name that is relevant to your business and easy to remember.
You will need to find a web hosting company to host your website. Web hosting is the service that stores your website’s files on its server so that you can access them from anywhere.
There are a variety of different hosting companies to choose from. For beginners, I recommend going with Hostinger, which is one of the best affordable hosting providers. Alternatively, you can do your research and find one that is right for you.
If you don’t want to start with the expenses on hosting, you can create a basic website for free using platforms like WordPress or Wix. The most important thing is that your website is easy to navigate and looks professional. You should choose a website design that is professional and reflects the branding of your business.
The content of your website is also very important. You need to make sure that the content is high-quality, relevant to your audience, and updated regularly.
Call To Action:
A Call to Action is a statement that encourages visitors to take some sort of action. This might be as simple as signing up for your email list, booking an appointment, downloading a free book, or making a purchase. It’s critical to make it as simple as possible for people who visit your website to do something.
Make sure you include a clear call to action on your website and make it easy for people to contact you. You also want to make sure your website is optimized for search engines so that it can be found by potential customers.
5. Create social media presence
Another essential part of digital marketing is creating a social media presence. It is a great way to connect with customers and build relationships with them. This involves setting up profiles on popular social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and more.
When creating your social media profiles, be sure to include a link back to your website. This will help you drive traffic to your website and increase awareness of your brand.
It is important to be active and post regularly on social media. Create engaging content that will capture the attention of your audience. Also, respond to comments and messages from followers.
You can also use social media to share news and updates about your business and to provide customer support.
Always choose the social media platforms wisely where most of your ideal customers are hanging around.
6. Get a digital marketing job
Don’t worry if you don’t have a degree. By this time, you already have a website and experience, which makes you quite a deserving candidate.
It is also one of the best ways to learn digital marketing. This will give you the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals and apply what you have learned so far to real-world situations.

7. Start executing what you have learned from Professionals
Once you have started learning about digital marketing with professionals, it’s time to start putting your knowledge into practice. This means creating content and campaigns for your website and social media profiles and tracking the results to see what works and what doesn’t.
It is important to be patient and not expect results overnight. It can take a while to find your groove and figure out what works best for your business, but that is okay. As long as you are constantly learning and experimenting, you will eventually find success.
It can be helpful to create a calendar or timeline for your marketing activities so that you can stay organized and ensure that everything is being done on a regular basis.
